Buying a video camera can be a scary proposition. They aren’t as easy to understand as digital cameras, and they contain a lot more features.

The idea of finding the exact one that’s right for you can seem so daunting that you might be tempted to simply walk into an electronics store and buy the highest-priced one you can afford.

But, before you go spending your money, take a look at our simple buying guide. We’ll spell out all the things you need to know, so you can make an informed choice.

  • Storage Type

  • Want to Win a Camcorder?

UnCut Video is giving away a Pure Digital Point & Shoot Video Camcorder every day during the month of June. Check this out for more info.

        Lens Type
When it comes to video camera lenses, one name dominates and ensures good quality. Look for a Carl Zeiss lens, which should provide you with years of crystal-clear shooting.

        Extras
The camera should come with some type of editing and burning software. We prefer to get a quality program bundled with, such as Adobe Premiere Elements, rather than a no-name title.

Consider buying a spare battery with your camera and, if you’re using a tape system, a few extra tapes, But don’t let the salesperson pressure you into buying more than you think you need. If you feel the salesperson is pushing too hard, you can always shop around and buy batteries and tapes later.
