What is the difference between USB 1.0 and USB 2.0?

The original USB standard, version 1.0, has been around for almost a decade. The newer USB 2.0 was introduced in 2000, and is much faster than the original 1.0 standard.
If your PC is more than four or five years old, it probably has USB 1.0 or 1.1 connections. If you have a newer PC, it probably has USB 2.0 connections.
Newer USB 2.0 ports are fully backward compatible with older USB 1.1 devices. You want to use newer USB 2.0 connections when you're installing devices that transfer a lot of data, such as external hard drives.
