That does not mean all software that provides ads or tracks your online activities is bad, there could be good reason to make sure you are targeted with ads that are appropriate. For example, you might sign up for a free music service, but instead of giving the company money you may agree to receive targeted ads that are geared and customized to your preferences. In this case you have agreed to a trade off, problem with some of these programs is that many users dont pay attention to the fine print.
Common spyware can make changes to your computer that can bring a whole host of problems for your computer. Some of these symptoms might be a dramatic slowing of your computer or inadvertent system crashes or constant rebooting. Some of these programs can also change your Web browser's home page or search page, or add additional components to your browser you don't need or want. These programs also make it very difficult for you to change your settings back to the way you originally had them. The key in all cases is whether or not you understand what the software will do and have agreed to install the software on your computer.
Spyware should not be taken lightly, your personal information coulld be recorded with a variety of techniques, one real nasty piece of software is called keylogging which can essentially capture every keystoke you type, your web browsing history and in some cases even email a screen shot of what you are doing on your computer at various times throughout the day without you even knowing. Purposes range from overtly criminal like theft of passwords and financial details to the annoying like recording Internet search history for targeted advertising, while consuming your computer resources, which in turn slows down your computer dramtically.
