How to Share Files Between Windows and Macintosh PCs

The Windows operating system is installed on the vast majority of our country’s computers. Macs make up a growing, but tiny, minority. So guess who has to work harder when it comes to sharing files?

If there was no easy way to share files between Windows and Macintosh computers, the people behind Windows wouldn’t lose a bit of sleep about it. Mac compatibility isn’t high on their priority list. But the people at Apple have worked hard to ensure that Macs can play nice with Windows. Why, the newest Intel processor Macs can even run Windows. Now that’s cross-platform.

Running a home network with both Windows and Macintosh computers isn’t the headache it used to be, thanks to Macs that can speak the language of Windows networking. As long as your Mac is running the latest operating system and your Windows PC is running XP or later, you should find getting them to speak to each other surprisingly easy.

  • Be patient when working with a home network, as it isn’t nearly as fast as an Internet connection. The first time you try to access it, you might not see any folders and conclude that something isn’t working. But just give it a few minutes. It can take a bit for the connection between computers to be made.
