Does a home network open my computers to threats like viruses?

Yes, although protecting yourself is easy. Using a router, rather than plugging an Ethernet cable directly into your computer, will deter most threats. If you're using a Windows computer, turning on the built-in Firewall will provide even better protection.

You should periodically run an anti-spyware and anti-virus program anyway, though, as malware can also enter through the browser or through e-mail.
