Most people listen to satellite radio in their cars, typically via satellite radio receivers built into their car audio systems. You can also add satellite radio to your car via transportable devices. You can listen to these transportable radios in your home, by plugging them into your home audio system) or in your car, by streaming their signal over your car's FM radio receiver.

Both XM and SIRIUS also offer true portable satellite receivers. These hand-held devices function much like an iPod or other portable music player, but receive live signals from the orbiting satellites. Many of these devices also include built-in hard drives, you can record satellite radio programming for later playback.

In addition, there are several ways to listen to satellite radio in the comfort of your own living room. You can connect a transportable or portable player into your home audio system, or you can buy a freestanding satellite radio receiver. Selected XM channels are also available over DIRECTV's satellite television service, and both XM and SIRIUS stream their music channels live over the Internet. For Internet-based satellite radio, all you need to do is point your web browser at the service's web page and start listening. (Subscription required, of course.)
