Millions of songs are available online, from today's hits to yesterday's classics to some obscure stuff you just can't find anyplace else. The key is where to find the songs you want, and then how to download them to your computer.

  • Before You Download

  • Downloading from an Online Music Store

  • Downloading from a Music Subscription Service

  • Downloading from a Free Music Site

  • Downloading from a File-Trading Network

  • Understanding Digital Rights Management

  • Playing the Music You've Downloaded

No matter which online music site you use, once you download a song to your computer, you can then listen to it on your PC or copy it to a portable music player. All the music files you download are usually stored in your PC's My Music folder, typically under subfolders for artist and album.

On your computer, you play back your music using a music player program, such as Windows Media Player or iTunes Music Player .

You also use this type of program to transfer the music you've downloaded to your iPod or other portable music player.
